Project Applause was founded in 2005 by a vocal performance major at a Northern California Junior College who felt that although he’d received a well-rounded foundation in musicianship and classical western European vocal repertoire, he and his fellow students required significantly more performance experience than was available through the school in order to become seasoned vocalists.
He realized this also created an opportunity to benefit the public by educating the broader community and revitalizing their interest in this elegant performance genre: solo vocal recital.
Why Project Applause?
Classical vocalists devote many years to their craft. They study music theory and composition, piano, foreign language and diction, vocal technique, repertoire and literary interpretation, and music history... just to name a few.
Unfortunately, adequate performance experience is often limited, even in the context of universities and other schooling. There are simply not enough venues for this genre to go around. For these emerging artists, there’s nothing that matches the experience of singing in front of a real audience.
Project Applause is here to fill in this gap. We create professional style concerts that attract large audiences, to educate them as well as provide entertainment. Many of our concerts serve as elegant and profitable fundraisers for local charities and organizations. Some functions are events hosted by local church or social groups and are specifically designed to promote community (see “Bel Canto” on our past events page. We also work with municipal entities to present affordable, educational concerts to the general public.
Our Shows are User Friendly
Many people shy away from classical vocal recital as it involves many different languages. All of our events feature a multimedia presentation that utilizes visual technology to clearly and easily translate the poetic content of music. Some of our shows are even preceded by a brief, easily understood lecture by a qualified scholar. Even the listener who has never heard a French aria is quickly prepared to listen with ease and enjoy the performance.
We are a non-profit, educational organization. There is no charge to the performers. Performers are not paid for singing.
